Those who wished to keep their lands and power in the Middle Ages had to build castles. Those who sought to expand their power had to capture them. In the small province of South Tyrol, around 800 fortresses and castles were built, resulting in a very eventful history. Many of these once defensive buildings are scattered all over the province and are open to visitors, bringing the Tyrolean Middle Ages into the present day
