Varna is the main village of the homonymous municipality and is located at 671 m asl. Boasting about 1,210 inhabitants, Varna has already been a popular holiday destination in the 19th century. Since the Brennero railway line with a station in Varna has been inaugurated, prosperous guests used to travel to Varna from Vienna or Munich, in order to find relaxation in the shadow of chestnut trees.
In unique location, guarding the village from above, there is the S. Giorgio parish church, the most ancient part of which are the Romanesque murals of the main nave. Once upon a time, Varna was also seat of Castel Voitsberg, unfortunately this mansion was destroyed in the 13th century, but it was name-giving for the town-hall. Historic murals that can still be visited today, however, are the ruins of Salerno Castle.
A destination for a getaway is the pond of Varna, which is highly frequented in summertime. Since 1977 it has been under natural protection. By the way, close to the lake of Varna, there is a pond for fishing with rainbow trouts, perches and roaches. This is where you can enjoy this popular leisure time activity, also if you are not in possession of a fishing license. Angling rods and baits are also available. Make a good catch!
