Flaines

Starting point for hikes to the Prantner Hut - the small village on the hill between the Val di Vizze and the Upper Valle Isarco

Near the Vipiteno train station, two roads branch off: One leads directly to Prati di Vizze, the other, smaller one, climbs up to Flaines (Flains) and continues, past Palù Castle and the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, also to Prati. Together with Tulves and Caminata di Vizze di Fuori, Flaines is one of the oldest settlements in the Val di Vizze: It was probably already inhabited around 600 AD.

Even then, people likely appreciated the panoramic location between the wide Upper Valle Isarco and the sheltered position at the entrance to the Val di Vizze. The first thing you see is the village church of St. John the Baptist. It seems large for the small village and is considered the oldest church in the valley. Inside, there is an originally designed reticulated vault. In summer you can enjoy the clear mountain air here - in winter, snow usually covers the area.

A worthwhile destination, both in summer and in winter, is the Prantner Hut, reachable via Flaines and Smudres. It sits about 800 metres above the village. In the summer, a magnificent view of the Stubai Alps, the mighty Tribulaun di Fleres, and down to Vipiteno awaits you on the sun terrace. After a winter hike to the Prantner Mountain Hut, the toboggan run beckons.

Goats, cows, and rabbits frolic between the playground and the alpine hut. Dishes such as pressed dumplings, South Tyrolean Marende, roast pork, and Wiener schnitzel are served. If you continue hiking, you will reach the equally popular Cima Gallina Mountain Hut in a short time.
