Bressanone, the ancient episcopal town with the Plose hiking and ski area above
Bressanone is centrally located in South Tyrol. The main transport routes lead north to the Brennero Pass, east to the Val Pusteria, and south to Bolzano. The charming town centre stretches out in the middle of the valley. Bressanone is one of the oldest town in Tyrol and boasts a long history - bishops resided here for almost 1,000 years. Before 990 AD, the episcopal see was moved from the Sabiona Monastery to Bressanone, and finally to Bolzano in 1964.
Around the imposing Bressanone Cathedral, the Large and Small Arcades stretch out, forming a shopping street with businesses nestled under the medieval archways.
Vineyards and orchards dominate the landscape on the edge of the town centre. The municipality also includes the surrounding villages on the Monte Ponente and Sant'Andrea on the slopes of the Plose mountain, as well as Albes, Elvas, Millan, Eores, and Sarnes.
The holiday villages thus extend up to the peaks of the Plose and the Odle di Eores mountains. The Plose itself is a well-known hiking and skiing area. For some years now, metre-high wooden letters next to the mountain station have been inviting visitors to climb. Trails like the family-friendly WoodyWalk and downhill tracks for mountain bikers in the Bressanone Bike Park complement the winter ski slopes in the summer. Bressanone fascinates with its combination of cultural offerings and the surrounding nature, which allows for a diverse activity programme.
Whether a Toerggele hike on the sunny slopes of the Monte Ponente, stopping off at a traditional "Buschenschank" farm inn, refreshing drinks at the Bressanone Summer Emotions, an afternoon of shopping, a winter hike on the Plose, or a visit to the Bressanone Christmas Market - the episcopal town and the surrounding villages offer something for everyone in every season.
