The mountain village in the municipality of Brennero is more than just a small hamlet steeped in history: Today, it's also a popular destination for shopping enthusiasts. The modern Outlet Center Brenner attracts visitors with dozens of shops and just as many brands, and is well-known far beyond the region. Amidst jeans, toys, and trainers, travellers and families bustle about daily.
The Outlet Center is the most recent addition to this historic location, once characterised by cafés and restaurants. This is hardly surprising, as Brennero village (Brenner Dorf) lies directly on the Brennero Pass, one of the most important Alpine transit routes and the main artery between Italy and Austria. Countless people have always travelled between north and south here.
Since the Treaty of Saint-Germain after the First World War, Brennero marked the border between Italy and Austria, and was thus also a border control point. Today, however, it only takes a moment to cross the historic border crossing and be welcomed by another country. The first documented mention dates back to 1288 AD as the "farm of a Prennerius". Its builder was "Chunradus Prenner de Mittewalde", after which the growing settlement was initially called Mittenwald (Mezzaselva) and later Brennero. The village looks back on a long history as a transit area, but also has its own churches: the Church of St. Valentine and the Parish Church of Our Lady of the Way.
From the village, the hills rise towards the Monte Sella, or Sattelberg. Here, you can hike on the Tyrolean High Route to the Sattelberg Hut and return via path number 1 and the Sattelmöser meadows - a lovely excursion into the Tyrolean mountains. The hike to the Genziana Zirago Hut with views of the Stubai Alps also starts in Brennero village, the main village of the municipality.
