High above the Isarco Valley stand the farms of Sant'Ingenuino (Saubach), a hamlet belonging to the municipality of Barbiano, but strictly speaking, not a separate district. The Rio Ingenuino stream flows through this small village. Its church, which forms the heart of Sant'Ingenuino, is dedicated to the Saints Ingenuinus and Albuin. Its origins date back to the 14th century, but the unusual choice of patron saints suggests a much older foundation.
A narrow mountain road connects the hamlet with the main village of Barbiano and with Colma in the valley. Sant'Ingenuino is an ideal starting point for hikes amidst a diverse natural landscape with some unique features. Whether it's the Barbiano Waterfalls, the ancient cup-marked stone of St. Verena, or the Barbiano chestnut groves - each of these places is worth a visit. The groves are home to the sweet chestnuts served during the traditional Toerggele afternoons and evenings.
The Sant'Ingenuino High Route, also called Saubacher Höhenweg, offers the opportunity to hike a section of the Chestnut Trail and return to the starting point after about an hour. A few years ago, Sant'Ingenuino gained further recognition with the opening of a 120-metre-long panoramic suspension bridge over the Rio Gander gorge. It connects the hamlet with Barbiano village and offers breathtaking views into the depths, reaching as far as the Barbiano Waterfalls.
Sant'Ingenuino is also the end point of second stage of the Chestnut Trail, considered the most beautiful of the multi-day tour. At the same time, stage 3 begins here, leading you to Chiusa.
