High above the Valle Isarco valley floor stand the houses and farms of Sant'Ingenuino. It is a hamlet that, strictly speaking, is not a district of Barbiano, but is part of the municipal territory. The Rio Ingenuino stream flows through the small village, and the village church, which forms the centre, is also dedicated to Saints Ingenuino and Albuino. Supposedly it dates back to the 14th century, but the choice of the two rather unusual church patron saints indicates a much older age.
A small mountain road connects the village with the main village of Barbiano and with Colma below. Sant'Ingenuino is a good starting point for hikes: There is plenty of nature all around and some special features in between. Every single one of them is worth a visit, such as the Barbiano Waterfalls, the ancient cup-marked stone of St. Verena or the chestnut groves. This is where the Barbiano sweet chestnuts grow, which are served at the traditional Toerggelen in autumn.
The Sant'Ingenuino High Route is the ideal way to walk a section of the famous Chestnut Trail and return to the village in a one-hour circular tour. A few years after its opening, Sant'Ingenuino (Saubach) became famous when a 120 metre long panoramic bridge was built over the Rio Gander Gorge, which now connects Sant'Ingenuino with Barbiano. The view from the bridge stretches all the way to the Barbiano Waterfalls, the view into the depth is impressive. Furtherrmore, in the hamlet ends the 2nd stage of the Chestnut Trail - known as the most beautiful one - and starts the 3rd stage, which leads to the charming medieval town of Chiusa.
