The Nativity Scene Museum in Lutago tells of the long tradition of woodcarving in the valley, which includes Christmas crèches
Lutago (Luttach) is the first village of the municipality of the Valle Aurina. The village centre is made up of small shops, cafés and the bus stop, so that you can easily reach all the other places in the valley in summer and the ski areas in winter also without a car. The parish church, on the other hand, the landmark of the holiday resort, rises on a hill in the midst of the mountain meadows outside of the centre. It is dedicated to two plague patrons, St. Sebastian and St. Roch. The farms of Lutago reach far up the steep wooded slopes, here on the south side of the Zillertal Alps.
These sunny slopes belong to Mt. Sasso Nero, literally Black Stone, the local mountain of Lutago. It is a popular destination for glacier-experienced hikers and ski tourers. Horse trekking and horse-drawn carriage rides are offered in the village itself. For something different in between, there is a visit to the Maranatha Nativity Scene Museum, which also includes an artist's studio. An entire room is dedicated to mask carving here, because the popular larvae with witches' and devils' faces are not only valuable, but are still worn today in the traditional Krampus runs.
In winter, Lutago is ideally situated between the two skiing areas of the SkiWorld Valle Aurina, Speikboden and Klausberg, three and eight kilometres away. You can also plan a tobogganing trip from "Luchta", as the locals call the village. The tobogganing and skiing route, which starts directly in the Speikboden Skiing Area, leads from the mountain station down to Lutago for 10 km. As the longest toboggan run in South Tyrol, it can also be artificially snowed and undoubtedly offers a holiday experience in a class of its own in the Valle Aurina valley.
