Above the main village of Martello lie alpine hiking destinations such as Lake Covelano and the majestic Cima Lasa peak
Meiern or Martello village is the name of the main village of the municipality of Martello on the sunny western slope of the valley. The road brings you up here from Ganda di Martello on the valley floor. Around the St. Walpurga Parish Church at 1,300 m a.s.l., the alpine meadows of the Val Martello valley stretch out and the houses of the village centre are located. In between, there are a few accommodation establishments, the community centre, the primary school and the volunteer fire brigade. The houses above are known as the Oberdorf (upper village).
Due to its sunny location, this village with the surrounding farmsteads is probably the oldest settlement in the Val Martello. Today, various relaxing hiking trails on the sunny slopes as well as some more challenging alpine tours start in Meiern. One of them begins directly at the church and takes you uphill to the Haslerböden area and the Steinwand Farm. Afterwards, the route continues over secured rock steps to the Morterer Leger meadow. Another one leads to the 2,320 m high Forcella di Covelano with Lake Covelano above it. A demanding tour for fit alpinists is the most imposing peak that rises above Meiern: the mighty Punta di Lasa, also called Orgelspitz.
The area in the Stelvio National Park makes hut hikes also an experience in winter, when the path down from the Livi Hut hut is simply covered by sledge. Another one of the toboggan runs in the Val Venosta can be found right in Meiern: the Hölderle natural sledge run. A few kilometres away, however, there are the perfectly groomed cross-county ski tracks of the Martello Nordic Ski and Biathlon Centre with guaranteed snow from November to March. It offers varied courses.
