The Val Venosta High Route and the Malles Heath invite you to hike and cycle in the two hamlets of Ultimo and Alsago

Two hamlets - one district: A short walk separates the two localities on the eastern edge of the Piana di Malles, the Malles Heath. Alsago (Alsack) with the Our Lady of the Snows Church lies on the slope below Mt. Salisatis, a peak of the Planol Mountains. On the outskirts of the village, the path leads uphill to the Albl Mountain Hut and then to the Planol Hut, a panoramic spot in the Planol Valley above the eponymous hamlet of Planol. The alpine hut can also be reached from there - mountain bikers appreciate the tour just as much as nature lovers.
A few hundred metres along the road and you are in Ultimo (Ulten), which is usually called Ultimo di Malles, so that there is no confusion with the Val d'Ultimo valley near Lana and the spa town of Merano. Ultimo also consists of a few houses, a bus stop and the St. Josef Chapel with its pyramid roof dating back to 1719. In addition, there is the small farm cheese dairy "aftmult". The field path for the hike across the Malles Heath starts in Ultimo. The fields were once important for Tyrol and known far and wide as the granary of the country. Today, flowers bloom here and cows graze.
But that is the reason why the old irrigation channels of the fields, called Waale, still criss-cross the area today and invite to beautiful hikes following these channels. The tour takes you to Burgusio with the Monte Maria Monastery, past the Prince's Castle towards Clusio and then to Malles village. The Val Venosta High Route also touches the Malles Heath and then climbs again to offer hikers magnificent views on the Val Venosta. In winter, Ultimo and Alsago, like all the component localities of Malles Venosta, benefit from their proximity to the Slingia Cross-country Skiing Centre and Mount Watles, the family-friendly skiing area on the other side of the valley.
