Fundres

Fundres, Fundres Valley, Rio di Fundres and Fundres Mountains form a single unit. The valley branches off from Vandoies and then winds its way in to the village of Vallarga and on and on until the small mountain village comes into view. Here is enough space for the houses to spread out to the right and left of the Rio di Fundres. In the middle of it all there is a bus stop and the St. Martin Church, which seems to watch over the village from its hill. It was mentioned already in the 11th century, but Fundres (Pfunders) had been settled much longer, as shown by a bronze dagger.

A little further into the valley, where there is no more to go, are the farms of the mountain hamlet of Dun, which belong to Fundres. The climate here is refreshing even in high summer and ideal for mountain and bicycle tours. These do not always have to be strenuous: Hikes to relax also lead along the Fundres Farm Trail and the Fundres Valley Path. The first tells about the life of the mountain farmers and the local customs, the valley trail even accompanies you to Vandoies di Sotto at the entrance to the valley. High up in the mountains, there is a challenge of a different kind: the Fundres High Route stretches in five long and demanding daily stages from Vipiteno to Brunico across the Fundres Mountains. It is one of the most beautiful of its kind.

Winter will be cosy. There are no ski resorts or cross-country skiing stadiums here, but a natural sledge run and one of the cross-country ski tracks in the Val Pusteria. All around, the silence of the snow-covered landscape that dominates at this altitude. Afterwards, a South Tyrolean Marende or a hot mulled wine await you. The ski centres are located out of the valley, towards the Valle Isarco with Gitschberg Jochtal and Plose, and in Brunico with the legendary Plan de Corones.
