Like San Martino in Casies, the neighbouring village, Santa Maddalena in Casies (St. Magdalena in Gsies) is also divided into Lower Valley and Upper Valley: Here, in the mountain air between 1,400 and 1,500 m a.s.l., at the end of the Casies Valley, the farms are surrounded by the Rieserferner Group and the Villgraten Mountains. The houses stretch up the slope amidst alpine meadows that blossom beautifully in summer. The parish church dedicated to St. Magdalene, which still displays individual elements of the Tyrolean late Gothic style, is enthroned in the centre.
Near Santa Maddalena is the famous Fondovalle Mountain Hut, called Talschlusshütte, the starting point for numerous hikes in the surrounding mountain world. Here you don't need a cable car, here the alpine pastures and peaks can be reached directly from the valley. One of the mountain tours follows the Casies Valley Almweg 2000 path, which connects several mountain huts such as the Tscharnietalm, Kipfelalm, Kaseralm and the legendary Uwald Hut. Sitting on a terrace high up in the mountains, with your legs stretched out under the sun, and enjoying South Tyrolean mountain cheese and typical Speck is a holiday memory that is still relaxing in everyday life.
In the 19th century, even the waters of Santa Maddalena in Casies were famous: The Casies Bath, one of the healing springs in South Tyrol, is said to have been used for rheumatism and muscle and limb pains. Then, when the first snowflakes fall, Santa Maddalena presents its winter attractions: The hiking trails become toboggan runs, the peaks destinations for ski tours and snowshoe hikes. In the valley, horse-drawn carriages pass by the small ski lift in the village.
