Valdaora di Sotto

A leisurely family hike, more a walk, starts from Valdaora di Sotto and leads via Valdaora di Mezzo to Valdaora di Sopra

Due to the construction of the Riggertal loop and safety-related works, sections of the Val Pusteria Railway will be closed until January 2026. A rail replacement bus service will be in operation.

From Valdaora di Mezzo, the streets and buildings merge almost seamlessly into the third district of the municipality, Valdaora di Sotto. The St. Peter and Agnes Parish Church is particularly worth mentioning, as Valdaora is one of the original parishes of South Tyrol: It enchants with its high altar with works by Michael Rasner from Bressanone, but was also of great importance as a burial place for the parish priests of Valdaora and the judges and caretakers of Castelvecchio Rasun.

Today, it is the only district of Valdaora that extends partly below 1,000 m a.s.l. Here, only a five-minute walk from the train station, is the heated Valdaora outdoor pool. This is particularly convenient if you want to take a dip in the cool water after a day of cycling along the "Pusterbike" cycle path or after a hike. From the sunbathing lawn, you can see the meadows, forests and peaks of the surroundings. From Valdaora di Sotto (Niederolang), a one-hour walk starts to Valdaora di Mezzo and Valdaora di Sopra, also ideal with a pram or for a café in the neighbouring village. Another walk takes you past the wayside shrine remembering the plague towards Sorafurcia.

As in the surrounding villages, the Plan de Corones Skiing Area also determines the active offer in winter in Valdaora di Sotto. Skiing and sledging have a long tradition here, the first lifts were opened in the 1960s. A few years later, the World Luge Championships were held on artificial track in Valdaora, and in 2000 the World Luge Championships took place on the natural track in Valdaora. In between, so to speak, the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park was founded, which today is one of the protected areas that try to preserve the most beautiful places in South Tyrol.
