Valdaora di Mezzo - in the centre of Valdaora - is the name of the main village of the municipality of Valdaora. Here in the valley basin the houses, shops and cafés extend around the Saint Giles Church to the station of the Val Pusteria Railway and the outdoor pool, which already belongs to the neighbouring district of Valdaora di Sotto. Nearby, the lifts start on the Plan de Corones. Up there in the lofty heights, there is a special highlight and adrenaline kick: The Skyscraper, a giant swing, has been set up to take you skywards with swing - with the feeling of flying over the valley.
The two museums on Mt. Plan de Corones tell of the mountains, while the buildings around the village centre tell of the history of Valdaora di Mezzo (Mitterolang). One of these is the Saint Giles Parish Church, dating back to 1138 AD, with its valuable frescoes by the Brunico painter Michael Pacher and his student Simon von Taisten. The monument dedicated to Peter Sigmayr also tells of times past and the Tyrolean freedom fights: It is known as the "Tharerdenkmal" (Tharer Monument) because Peter Sigmayr was the eldest son of the Tharerwirt innkeeper of Valdaora.
Being active is the order of the day here. For a hike, we recommend the Lanzwiese Hut high above Valdaora, which invites you to enjoy a refreshing stop. It stands in the middle of an alpine meadow at 1,823 m a.s.l. in the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park. In addition, there is the "Pusterbike" cycle path between San Candido and Fortezza. In winter, most visitors are attracted to the Plan de Corones: The days are varied because the more than 100 km of pistes are connected to the Dolomiti Superski ski carousel and are complemented by sledge runs and a snow park.
