Sorafurcia

There are smaller and more remote villages than Sorafurcia, but the peace and clear air make you think of alpine pasture summers

Due to the construction of the Riggertal loop and safety-related works, sections of the Val Pusteria Railway will be closed until January 2026. A rail replacement bus service will be in operation.

About 300 m higher than the other parts of Valdaora, the mountain village of Sorafurcia nestles on the valley flank of Mt. Plan de Corones: The only place you can get closer to a day of skiing in winter than here is on the slopes themselves. Above the roofs of Sorafurcia you can see the tower of the Parish Church of St. Wolfgang, which is associated with the bear legend: It is said that the farmer of the Arndthof was once attacked by a bear on the Passo Furcia and vowed to build a church on the site of his farm chapel if he was rescued. Today's building dates back to the 15th century, from this time also comes the fresco of St. Christopher by Simon von Taisten.

A millennium ago, Sorafurcia (Geiselsberg) was mentioned as "Gisilhartisberc", today it attracts the attention of connoisseurs and active holidaymakers who want to experience the Val Pusteria and the heights of the Passo Furcia and Plan de Corones on their own. The hamlet is ideally suited for hiking: South of Sorafurcia lies the 1,789 m high Furcia Pass or Furkelpass, the starting point of the paths up to the Plan de Corones. You can also get there by mountain bike. Popular destinations are the Geiselsberger and the Pracken Mountain Huts, Mt. Punta Tre Dita and Lake Colli Alti.

Sorafurcia is also known for the nearby Pervalle or Bergfall Baths, whose sulphur springs were already known by the Romans. In winter, Mt. Plan de Corones becomes a skiing area with lifts that start in Casola and lead to about 120 km of slopes, directly into the centre of South Tyrol's largest skiing area. The two museums on the summit - the LUMEN and the MMM Corones - remain open in winter, but only in summer you can swing 15 m above the ground with the Skyscraper.
