Onies - Costa d’Onies

The most distant village of San Lorenzo di Sebato lies on a mountain ridge: Onies with the small hamlet of Costa d’Onies next to it

Onies clings to the slope south of Mantana, which is interspersed with ash trees and shrubs to stabilise the soil. Despite the steep location, resting places of prehistoric hunters could be identified here. In the centuries after the plague period, the "Kirchtagsalmosen" was celebrated in Onies, a custom in which every landowner had to pay a fair tax, which was used to buy a bull. It was slaughtered and prepared on the Saturday before the fair, the soup was distributed to the poor. The custom was only abandoned in the 19th century, but is still documented in writing.

Here you are already in the Val Badia, which then officially begins in the neighbouring Marebbe. Onies (Onach) is divided into two parts: Onies di Sotto around the St. James the Great Parish Church, and Onies di Sopra with the Aster Chapel dedicated to Mary Our Lady of the Snows and the higher situated farms. In addition, there is the hamlet of Costa d'Onies (Hörschwang) on Mt. Elle. With a distance of eight kilometres, both mountain villages are the furthest away from the main village of the municipality, but the means of public transport regularly connects Onies with the shopping, cultural and sports destinations of San Lorenzo, where there is also a train station.

Whether the Anton Schwingshackl Path, the Munt da Rina Hut or the Forcella de Lijun gap, there are various options for hiking here. The Anton Schwingshackl Trail is a 16 km long circular hike that starts at the Messnerwirt inn in Onies and leads to the Wieser and Munt da Rina Mountain Huts before bringing you back to Onies. In winter, South Tyrol's mountains transform into breathtaking landscapes with magnificent skiing areas, so Onies is in a privileged position between two of them: Plan de Corones and Alta Badia. Both are connected to the famous Dolomiti Superski ski carousel.
