Sopranessano, called Aschbach in German, explains where the hamlet it is located: sopra Nessano, that's to say above Nessano (sopra means above in Italian). From there, a small mountain road leads up the slope to almost 1,500 m a.s.l., almost exactly on the border to the vast area of the Vedrette di Ries-Aurina Nature Park. Many aspen trees grow here, which once gave the village the name "Aspen". Today, mountain farms rise on the sunny meadows, where the one or other farm tavern also invites you to stop for a bite to eat. One of them is the Niedrist farm inn.
The hamlet can also be reached on foot: A hike starts from Nessano up a steep forest path. The area is characterised by small buildings spread out like dots on the mountain, including the double farmstead Redensberg, and places in nature such as the ditch of the Rio Nessano. In winter, the small farms sink under a thick blanket of snow and can be reached in a panoramic winter hike.
There are no accommodation establishments in Sopranessano, only nature and meadows and delicious seasonal produce from the farm gardens. However, a village with the German name Aschbach also exists in the Merano region: Aschbach near Lagundo, Rio Lagundo in Italian, can be reached by cable car and is known for its adventure trail and the circular path to Mt. San Vigilio.
