It is more than a millennium since "Kiena" was first mentioned with "Castrum Chienes", i.e. a few houses that stood around the church. Today, Chienes, the main village of the municipality of the same name, stretches out where the Rio Verde flows into the Rienza and the valley floor rises towards the Val Pusteria low mountain range. In the valley, the "Pusterbike" cycle track takes you quite flat to Brunico, while the mountain road leads from the village towards Terento and Falzes: It is the Val Pusteria Sun Road, the perfect destination for a pleasant bike tour on this sun terrace.
There, on the sunny plateau above Chienes, but already part of the municipality of Falzes, you can find three interesting places: One of them is the Bergila mountain pine oil distillery, where you can immerse yourself in the world of herbs and scents, a true experience for the senses. The other two are right next to each other: the Issengo bathing pond and the Kronaction Outdoor and Fun Park, both summer excursion destinations especially appreciated by families.
In Chienes village (Kiens Dorf) itself, the historic centre consists of a few houses and cobbled streets, with the Parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul right in the middle. It actually dates back to the 19th century, but its tower dates back to the 15th century, a mix of styles that can be seen on many a church in South Tyrol. Tennis courts and a playground provide some relaxation, a pharmacy and shops offer local shopping opportunities. In winter, it's off to the slopes - the Plan de Corones Skiing Area is 12 km away and easily accessible by public transport. It's a little further in the other direction to the cross-country ski tracks of the Rodengo and Luson Alp.
