Between Nova Ponente village and Obereggen lies the small village of Ega with its settlements of Ponte Nova (Birchabruck) and Novale (Rauth). It is also called San Nicolò: The name goes back to the patron saint of the church, who was worshipped by the miners in Ega and who was supposed to protect the village from the whitewater of the Sam and Gerold Brooks. Here you are directly at the feet of the so-called Latemar Dolls in the Latemar Group. When the sun shines, dolls dressed in silk can still be seen in the bizarre rock formations - at least that is how the legend tells it.
Especially winter has a lot to offer in Ega (Eggen), the range of activities all around is wide. It ranges from the Latemar-Obereggen Ski Center, only 3 km away, with its slopes at the foot of the Latemar, to the 100 km cross-country skiing network between Nova Ponente and the Lavazè Pass in the Fiemme Valley, with magnificent views on Mt. Latemar, Mt. Corno Nero and Mt. Corno Bianco. At the top of the woodless pass, the trails run mostly through an open, sunlit landscape. Further down, they take you to destinations such as the Pietralba Pilgrimage Site or the Laab Hut.
In summer, Ega is the starting point to the climbing and hiking area of the Val d'Ega Dolomites. The fourth stage of the South Tyrolean Pearl Trail, which starts in the valley basin of Bolzano, passes through the area of the Ega Mountain Huts, the famous Eggentaler Almen. Also popular are the guided tours, which are offered weekly in summer and include a morning run for joggers and walkers followed by breakfast, as well as the magical adventure kingdom called Latemarium.
