Cornedo village (Karneid Dorf) is situated slightly above the Valle Isarco in a sunny, low mountain landscape. It gives its name to the entire municipality, which is majestically overlooked by Cornedo Castle. In the past, the rock on which the castle stands was a strategically important position on the way over the Brennero Pass. Today, the massive complex from the 13th century is considered one of the most beautiful and best preserved in South Tyrol and is open to visitors in summer.
Along the road to the village centre and into the Val d'Ega, there is a point that offers a beautiful view on the castle, the surrounding vineyards and the provincial capital of Bolzano. A number of hiking trails also pass by there, so you can even reach San Valentino in Campo on foot, the location of the famous Astronomical Observatory Max Valier. The hike follows a section of the South Tyrolean Pearl Trail, a five-day tour of 80 km: It starts just below Cornedo village, in Cardano, and takes you to the Passo Nigra and the famous Lake Carezza, the "Rainbow Lake".
The centre of the village on Mt. Cornedo is characterised by individual houses and a few restaurants, as well as the primary school and the St. Vitus Church. The lower part of the tower is Romanesque and tells of the early days of the church in the 14th century. St. Vitus, patron saint of pharmacists, innkeepers, brewers, winegrowers, coppersmiths, dancers and actors, also gave his name to the hamlet of San Vito near Cornedo. The administrative centre with post office and carabinieri station, on the other hand, is located in Cardano, the neighbouring village in the valley.
