The little village of Niclara is located about 1 km in the south of Cortaccia along the Wine Route towards Magré. Boasting some 150 inhabitants, Niclara looks back on an interesting history, as despite of its small dimensions it used to the the seat of the court for a considerable period of time.
Centre of the village, however, is the church dating back to the 17th century, adorned by a painting of Virgin of Mercy. At the foot of the motte, there is Castel Thurmhof, which is a residence owned by the Tiefenbrunner family. Particularly worth noticing is the residential highrise dating back to the 13th century, while the other components of the castle complex dates back to subsequent periods.
Today this residence hosts a wine cellar. Worth a visit is also the Garden of Fairytales in the park of the castle with a swannery.
If you love walking, we recommend you to hike along the wine educational trail going past Niclara. A fascinating natural phenomenon is the so called “Regenstein” (rain rock), a huge trass from which water comes out. According to a legend, a princess is jailed inside the rock, whose teardrops keep the rock moist.
