Located at 800 m asl, Corona extends on a sun-drenched plateau above Cortaccia

Corona is located on a sun-drenched plateau in the Bassa Atesina at an altitude of 800 m. Its name probably derives from its position high above the valley, as “Corona” means “crown”. A particular viewpoint in the village is the so-called “Sitzkofel”, from where you can enjoy a breathtaking view on the Bassa Atesina as well as the Dolomite peaks.
The village, boasting a total of 250 inhabitants, was able to preserve its original character. The majority of people still earns its living in the field of agriculture. Despite of the high location of Corona, grapevines and fruit trees flourish right here.
Slightly away from the village, there is the Gothic parish church dedicated to Saint Georg. It boasts a Romanesque steeple dating back to the 13th century as well as a Baroque high altar (1713), which originally adorned the former S. George’s church of Pianizza di Sopra in Caldaro. By the way, from Cortaccia a contemplation path with 14 stations of the cross, leading to Corona.
