The largest locality of Caldaro, that is to say Villa di Mezzo, lies at 477 m asl, slightly above the centre of the municipality. “Broilo”, which reveals Roman origins, was the original name for the village up to the 13th century, while this term transformed to “Brühl” in the course of time.
The historic centre, however, boasts two castles and a series of mansions, testimonies of the past. Castel Campan for example was buit by Consius von Campan in Gothic construction style in 1268, while Sallegg Castle was established by the lords Von All in the 16th century. Both of them are still inhabited today, for this reason they can unfortunately be visited only from outside.
The church of Villa di Mezzo is dedicated to Santa Caterina and was built between 1517 and 1520. The interior of the Gothic church features precious wall paintings of the “Bozner Schule” (1414) as well as a beautiful side altar adorned with a late Gothic heroic figure.
Our tip: make a stroll across the narrow alleys of Villa di Mezzo and admire the beautiful bays, the majestic enclosure and mansions in the village.
