Villa di Mezzo (Mitterdorf), formerly known as "Brühl", isn't the main town of the municipality of Caldaro, but it's its largest district. Located directly adjacent to Caldaro village, its name suggests Roman or Lombardic origins. A stroll through Villa di Mezzo's streets, easily accessible by public transport, reveals fascinating insights and charming details.
Numerous stately homes characterise the village. The two castles, Campan and Sallegg, are also closely linked to viticulture. Castel Sallegg, built in the 16th century as the manor house of the Lords of All, includes historic wine-producing farms and a 1,000-year-old cellar.
The Gothic Castel Campan, built in 1268 and later renovated in Renaissance style, is also inhabited and lends its name to an excellent wine. The "Castel Campan" wine is produced in the Manincor Winery, owned, like the castle itself, by the Counts of Enzenberg. Between the castles sits the Church of St Catherine. Inside are precious murals from the Bolzano Art School dating back to 1414 and an impressive side altar with late-Gothic figures of saints.
Around the Major von Morandell Square, Villa di Mezzo offers all essential amenities, including a fire station, kindergarten, and retirement home. From here, you can embark on excursions in all directions: up to the Mendola Pass, down to Lake Caldaro, north towards Bolzano, or south to Termeno. Discover the region's viticulture on the Castel Sallegg Wine Trail. Here, you'll learn about the grape varieties grown in the panoramic setting between Villa di Mezzo and Caldaro village.
