Nestled in a landscape of vines and flowers, palm trees and cypresses, the surroundings of Pianizza di Sotto (Unterplanitzing, in German) invite you to pleasant walks and cycle tours. The small wine village with its rural character is located directly on the famous South Tyrolean Wine Road. On the journey towards south you will pass residences with historic archways, turrets and winding courtyards. One of them is the Moser Winery.
Here in Pianizza di Sotto was probably the junction of the ancient Roman road over the Mendola Pass to the Alta Val di Non. The assumption is based on the former churches that stood at the fork in the road and were dedicated to S. Leonardo. This ancient cart track was already mentioned in the Letter of Saint Vigilius. Even today, a church still forms the centre of the wine village, albeit not geographically. It was built on the remains of a Romanesque church and consecrated in 1429. The frescoes in its interior date back to around 1360.
A junction takes you between the houses down into the valley basin, where the Oltradige Cycle Path passes. Over a length of 20 km it connects the town of Bolzano with the wine-growing area between Appiano and Caldaro. This excursion invites you to take a break right in Pianizza di Sotto: at the Christl im Loch snack station with its sun terrace and playground in the middle of the countryside.
