High above Lake Caldaro and the roofs of Campi al Lago, there is the majestic Castelchiaro castle towering into the sky
A bit of Caldaro, a bit of Vadena: Campi al Lago (Klughammer, in German) on the eastern shore of Lake Caldaro is part of Caldaro on the Wine Road, but administratively belongs to Vadena (Pfatten), the municipality on the other side of the wooded Monte di Mezzo (Mitterberg). The protected location between the mountainside and the lake, makes Campi al Lago a small secluded paradise, which impresses with its flowers and colours especially in spring and autumn.
High above the roofs, the ruins of Castelchiaro castle peaks out through the trees. It is said that it was built already 1,200 years ago, but this has not yet been proven - instead, legends grow around the old building. Today, remains of the palas with frescoes from the 15th century are still well preserved and can be reached via an iron staircase. In front of the castle ruin there is a seating area and a wonderful view on the lake from the castle wall. A little behind it, on the road across the Passo di Novale al Varco to Vadena, there is another ruin, Varco Castle, which cannot be seen from the lake.
The short hike, which takes you to the Castelchiaro ruin, starts at the parking space above Campi al Lago. From here, you can also reach the Horse Teeth, a very special rock formation, and the warm air springs. In opposite direction, on the southern shore, there is another excursion destination: the Lake Caldaro Biotope. This reed belt, an important breeding place for rare birds and other animals, is the largest preserved wetland between the Po Plain and the main ridge of the Alps: It can be discovered on wooden walkways.
