Verano, South Tyrol’s sunny high plateau with panoramic views of the Valle dell’Adige valley
High above the Adige Valley, on the Monzoccolo Plateau, lies the sunny village of Verano. The Monzoccolo itself is a low mountain ridge between Bolzano and Merano, a popular hiking area known for its grazing Haflinger horses and larch meadows. In autumn, these meadows bathe the landscape in yellow, orange, and golden hues before winter blankets the hamlets in snow. The municipality of Verano consists of the main village, Verano village, and the hamlet of Eschio, including the settlements of Hinterkofl, Malga Leadner, and Unterdorf.
You can reach Verano via a panoramic road from Meltina or Avelengo or by cable car from Postal in the Adige Valley. The route down into the valley is also ideal for speed hiking.
In the village itself, surrounded by extensive meadows and fields, you'll find peace and relaxation. As one of the ten model municipalities of the "Working Group of Alpine Regions", Verano operates a bio-solar heating plant. Numerous craft businesses and farms characterise the village, some offering farm holidays.
Some farms, like the Tötnmoarhof, still have traditional thatched roofs - a legacy from the time of the Bavarians. Even the Romans appreciated Verano's location: The village name means "estate of Varius". Today, numerous destinations beckon around it. Malga Leadner is an ideal starting point for hikes, for example, to the "Knottnkino", a unique viewing platform on the Sasso Rosso hill.
Nature itself writes the script for the panoramic view over the Adige Valley and the surrounding mountains - a different spectacle every season. Take a seat and enjoy this silent film of nature. In winter, the high plateau transforms into a paradise for winter hikes and horseback riding.
