The sunny village of Verano has its own natural cinema to offer: The “Knottnkino” shows you the Valle dell’Adige in the different seasons
High above the Adige Valley, on the plateau of the Monzoccolo, also known as Tschögglberg, lies one of the sunniest villages of South Tyrol: Verano. The Monzoccolo itself is a low mountain ridge between Bolzano and Merano and a popular hiking area, particularly known for the grazing Haflinger horses and for its larch meadows. These turn yellow, orange and golden in autumn and enchant the landscape with colours before a blanket of snow covers Verano and its hamlets.
The municipal area consists of the main village of Verano village and the district of Eschio, as well as the settlements of Hinterkofl, Malga Leadner and Unterdorf (Lower Village). Verano can be reached on a panoramic road from Meltina or Avelengo, or by cable car from Postal in the Adige Valley. The way down can also be done on foot and is a popular route for speed hiking. In the area of Verano, surrounded by spacious meadows and fields, you can feel the peace. As one of the ten model communities of the "Association of the Alpine States" (Arge Alp), Verano still has a bio-solar heating plant today. In addition, there are numerous handicraft businesses and farms that partly offer farm holidays. Several of them, including the Tötnmoarhof, are covered with the typical thatched roofs which date back to the time of the Bavarians.
Already the Romans appreciated the location of Verano, the village name means something like "estate of Varius". Today, there are enchanting excursion destinations all around. The Leadner Mountain Hut is ideal for a hike, which can then be extended to the "Knottnkino", a unique vantage point. From the rock you can see the Adige Valley and the mountains in the changing seasons. Just like in the cinema, you can sit down on a chair and enjoy this silent film of nature. In winter, the high plateau becomes the perfect destination for winter hikes and horseback rides.
