Explore the sights around Tirolo village on the Falkner Promenade, the Tappeiner Promenade and the Castle Path
Tirolo village (Dorf Tirol), the main village of the municipality of the same name, extends across the Monte San Benedetto between the Merano basin and the entrance to the Val Passiria. The village itself is younger than the majestic Tyrol Castle, perched atop a hill inhabited since prehistoric times. Once built as the ancestral seat of the Counts of Tyrol, it gave the entire region its name.
From here, the County of Tyrol was governed, and today it houses the South Tyrolean Museum of Culture and Provincial History, which will transport you back to this era. Below the castle, also within historic walls, lies the village's second museum: the Museum of Agriculture at Fontana Castle. A footpath, starting in Tirolo village, leads to both these attractions.
In the village centre, you'll find a promenade with cafés and shops. It clusters around the town hall, the Parish Church of St. John, and the Carabinieri station. The bus, providing easy access to Merano, also stops here. The outskirts of the village offer sporting opportunities, including a football pitch and the Tirolo outdoor pool open during the summer months.
Tirolo village loves to celebrate: From the Spring of Culture Festival in April to the Soirées at Tyrol Castle in summer, and VinoCulti in autumn, there's something for everyone. During Advent, the castle is transformed into a Christmas wonderland with hot drinks and a festive atmosphere.
