Schernag

The unique story of Schernag: a village on the valley floor belonging to Tesimo in the highlands

Schernag lies on the edge of Nalles, where the Prissiano road begins near Stachelburg Castle. While the houses of Schernag appear to belong to Nalles on the South Tyrolean Wine Route, they are actually within the municipality of Tesimo. Schernag forms the gateway to the low mountain range and is the only part of Tesimo situated on the valley floor. All other component localites, such as Grissiano, Plazzoles, Prissiano, and Caprile, are located in the highlands.

Daily life for the villagers therefore largely revolves around Nalles. Flowing through Schernag is the Rio Nalles stream, which played a significant role from 1810 to 1814 AD. The Tyrolean freedom fights under Andreas Hofer at Bergisel hill in Innsbruck ended in defeat in 1809. Following this, Bavaria ceded the Adige region to Italy. With its capital Trento, it was then one of the 15 administrative regions of the Kingdom of Bavaria. Napoleon subsequently drew the new national border between the Kingdom of Bavaria and Italy along the Rio Nalles.

Thanks to its location in the mild climate of the Adige Valley, Schernag is an ideal starting point, especially in spring, for cycling tours or walks through the flowering apple orchards and fruit gardens. A hike of about half an hour will take you up to the ruins of Casatsch Castle.

The oval curtain wall of the castle, also known as Pfeffersburg, dates back to the 12th century, while the remaining ruins are more recent. The site was restored and secured several years ago. Today, a small exhibition on the history of the castle awaits you in the courtyard.
