Schernag, a small village with an interesting history, is the only district of Tesimo situated on the bottom of the valley

The houses of Schernag are located on the edge of Nalles, at the beginning of the road to Prissiano at the Stachelburg Residence. They seem to belong to Nalles on the South Tyrolean Wine Road, but they are already in another municipal area, the one of Tesimo. Schernag is the part of Tesimo that forms the gateway to the low mountain range and the only one that lies on the valley floor. The others, that is Grissiano, Plazzoles, Prissiano and Caprile, are part of the low mountain range.
The everyday life of the villagers takes place mainly in Nalles. The Nalles Stream flows through Schernag and was of great importance for four years, from 1810 to 1814. When the Tyrolean Fights for Freedom led by Andreas Hofer ended in defeat at the Bergisel hill near Innsbruck in 1809, the Adige region (Etschkreis) was assigned by Bavaria to Italy. At that time, the "Etschkreis" with its capital of Trento formed one of the 15 districts of the Kingdom of Bavaria. Napoleon then set the new state border between the Kingdom of Bavaria and that of Italy along the stream.
Thanks to its location in the mild climate of the Adige Valley, Schernag is particularly suitable in spring as a starting point for cycling tours or walks through the blossoming apple meadows and orchards. A hike also takes you upwards and ends after half an hour at Casatsch Castle. Its oval ring wall dates back to the 12th century, the other remains are younger. The castle was restored several years ago, and today you can find a small exhibition about its history in the courtyard.
