Labers

Labers Castle in the district of the same name, Labers: a historical gem above Merano

Above Merano's town centre, nestled amongst vineyards and apple orchards, lies the small, dispersed settlement of Labers, part of the Maia Alta district. Among the residential houses stands Labers Castle, first mentioned in the 11th century. Restored in 1885, it was embellished with two new corner towers. Today, the historic building houses a hotel.

Nearby are two other stately homes: Rametz Castle with its Wine Museum, offering wine tastings during guided tours, and Trauttmansdorff Castle, surrounded by its unique botanical gardens. These gardens encompass the the Landscapes of South Tyrol, the Water and Terraced Gardens, the Forests of the World and the Sun Gardens.

Between them, the Matteo Thun Viewing Platform offers stunning views of Merano and the distant glaciers. Sun loungers and a café invite you to relax by the water lily pond. Above Labers lies the Freiberg or Montefranco mountain and the entrance to the Nova Valley.

The cable car to the hiking and skiing area Merano 2000 starts there. Along the Via Castel Gatto road, which winds its way up the slope, Toerggele taverns, the farm inns that are known in German as "Buschenschänke", invite you to enjoy roasted chestnuts and new wine in autumn. Merano celebrates this season with the Merano WineFestival and the Grape Festival.
