The weekly farmers’ market and the Sterntaler Christmas Market take place in the newly developed shopping mile Via Gries

Immediately after the Church of the Holy Cross, Lana di Mezzo merges into Lana di Sopra or Upper Lana. It first reaches the Culture House and the Capuchin Church, where the pedestrian zone Via Gries with its small shops and cafés extends. Partly it is lively and busy, partly pleasantly quiet and sleepy. At one end, on the Town Hall Square, the weekly farmer's market takes place, while at the other end the historic Thaler Residence is enthroned, a bit hidden. Its history dates back to 1333. If you look closely, you can see some Turkish heads with turbans from the early 18th century among the paintings on the façade, which remind of the Turkish wars in Europe.
As the town hall is located in Lana di Sopra, it is the centre of the municipality. After that, the road divides at the roundabout: On the left you reach the hamlet of Foiana and the Passo Palade, straight ahead you pass the bus station towards Merano or the Val d'Ultimo. Nearby is the Gaul Canyon with its suspension bridges and the jungle-like vegetation where mosses grow. Through this gorge at the foot of Braunsberg Castle runs the Valsura, which comes from the far end of the Val d'Ultimo and then flows into the Adige River. In winter you can ice skate between the cliffs.
The castles and fortresses on the hills around immediately catch the eye: One of them is the above-mentioned Braunsberg Castle. A walkway with a suspension bridge leads from the Gaul Canyon to this historic building, which is still owned by the Counts of Trapp and can therefore only be viewed from the outside. The higher altitudes can be reached by cable car a little further north: It takes you to the Monte San Vigilio Hiking and Skiing Area above Lana di Sopra (Oberlana).
