Health resort and chestnut village - Foiana is a historic holiday destination above the Adige Valley, surrounded by vineyards
Foiana is situated on a sunny slope above Lana. This village at 700 m a.s.l. is known as a climatic health resort and is surrounded by forests, orchards and vineyards, which allow a good harvest due to the pleasant climate. A central theme are the chestnuts, the so-called "Keschtn": There is a Chestnut Trail and farm inns that offer Törggele evenings in autumn. In October, the sweet chestnuts are celebrated extensively at the "Keschtnriggl", an event lasting several weeks. After Foiana, the panoramic road, an architectural masterpiece, climbs towards the Palade Pass.
Foiana is known as a quiet holiday village that is highly appreciated by active holidaymakers. It is ideally situated above the Adige Valley between Bolzano and Merano, and below the Passo Palade, also known as Gampenpass, with its alpine huts and mountain lakes. The cycle tours start from Foiana via the Rateiser Path towards the Val d'Ultimo valley and past the Valle dell'Inferno (Hell Valley) to the Forcella di Plazzoles ridge. The hiking trails around Foiana (Völlan) lead to panoramic spots like the hill of St. Hippolytus, past traces of prehistoric, Rhaetian and Celtic settlements.
The oldest building in Foiana is the Parish Church of St. Severinus, built around 1200 AD. In the centre, in addition to the association house and the primary school, a hairdressing salon and other facilities, you will also find a small farm life museum. It tells about the life of farmers in former times and shows tools as well as furnishings and utensils. Mayenburg Castle from the 12th century is enthroned on the edge of the village: Unfortunately it is not open to the public, but it is worth seeing from the outside, just like the bridges from Roman times, if you continue towards Tesimo.
