Lagundo’s vineyards and the Texel Group: scenic views from the idyllic hamlet of Vellau
The chairlift gently ascends the slope, revealing a picture-perfect village: The wood of the farmhouses, lush green meadows and forests, the rugged peaks of the Texel Group, and the brilliant blue sky - all this makes Velloi (Vellau) an idyllic destination and a perfect photo motif.
Situated at almost 1,000 metres above sea level, Mt. Cima Muta and Mt. Cima Rossa di Sopranes rise majestically above the village. This small hamlet, mentioned centuries ago as "Velaw", has long been accessible to visitors. Construction of the Plars-Vellloi Chairlift and the material ropeway, which leads even further up, began in the 1960s. At the ropeway's mountain station, the Leiter Mountain Hut awaits, located directly on the Merano High Route, a five- to eight-day trek across the Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park. Alternatively, Velloi can be reached via a mountain road leading up from the main village of Lagundo. The Holy Trinity Church dominates the village centre.
The first church building dates back to 1724, but when it became too small for the growing population, the current, larger church was built. Numerous trails, such as the Saxner Path and the Hans-Frieden-Trail, wind through the impressive natural landscape surrounding Velloi.
Sure-footed and experienced hikers can tackle a tour to the Sopranes Lakes above the hamlet or the Velloi Rock Trail. The latter is a via ferrata leading to the historic Muta Farms above Tirolo.
