The Garden Village of Lagundo: Waalwege paths, the Texel Group peaks, and charming churches in the heart the Merano region
A Mediterranean climate meets the peaks of the Texel Group: Lagundo welcomes you with vineyards, apple orchards, and a captivating mountain landscape. The municipality stretches from the Adige Valley up into the Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park.
From Rio Lagundo, accessible by cable car, the path leads down to the orchards of Ried and onwards to the gorge near Foresta with its brewery and the eponymous Foresta Castle (Vorst or Forst Castle in German). It is said that the minstrel Oswald von Wolkenstein was once held captive there by his lover.
Beyond the valley, Lagundo extends to the slopes of Plars, the mountain village of Velloi, and further south to Riomolino and Lagundo village. With 160 kilometres of hiking trails between the Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park, the largest in South Tyrol, and the valley floor, the municipality is a hiker's paradise.
Cyclists will also find plenty to enjoy: The Val Venosta Cycle Path passes directly by the village and ends in Merano, where it connects to the Valle dell'Adige Cycle Path, which takes you all the way to Bolzano. Particularly popular is the Lagundo Waalweg path, which follows the sunny slopes along the historic irrigation channel to Tel. From there, you can easily return by bus.
Lagundo is characterised by a multitude of churches and chapels. The Maria Steinach Monastery, a bridgehead of the Via Claudia Augusta as well as valuable frescoes and cup-marked stones, cult stones from pre-Christian times, complete the journey into past centuries and millennia. Experience the lively farmers' markets, the enchanting apple blossom in spring, and the atmospheric Forst Christmas Forest with a limited-edition Forst Christmas Beer during Advent.
