Avelengo di Sopra

Enjoy the Moschwald Mountain Hut above Avelengo di Sopra - a sunny spot with wonderful views

Avelengo di Sopra (Hafling Oberdorf, literally: Avelengo Upper Village), as the name suggests, is located above Avelengo village and is the only clustered settlement area in the municipality. It emerged only after the construction of the road from Merano to Avelengo a few decades ago.

Before that, in the years before 1980, higher-altitude villages like Santa Caterina were only accessible via a strenuous stone-slab path. Avelengo di Sopra is a small paradise, especially for nature lovers. Hiking, cycling and leisurely walks invite you to explore the surrounding area on beautiful trails. The spa town of Merano is easily accessible by bus.

One of the most popular excursions is the hike to the Moschwald Mountain Hut, which offers its own unique charm in every season. In spring, the meadows bloom in full splendour. In summer, the shady forests provide pleasant coolness; and in autumn, nature offers particularly beautiful photo opportunities. The larches on the Monzoccolo, the high plateau between Merano and Bolzano, turn vibrant shades of yellow, orange and bronze, transforming the landscape.

The winter in Avelengo di Sopra is popular because of its proximity to Falzeben. From there, you can access the Merano 2000 Skiing Area. In addition to ski slopes, there's a toboggan run, winter hiking trails, the Outdoor Kids Camp Merano 2000 and the Alpin Bob. This year-round alpine coaster on rails guarantees action and fun, as it whooshes from the mountain station down to the valley, taking you on an adrenaline-pumping ride between bends and bridges.
