The European long-distance hiking trail E5 leads from the village across the larch meadows on the Salto to the church of Lavena
The main village of San Genesio Atesino spreads out on a sloping terrace at about 1,100 m a.s.l. and can be seen from the road that leads from Bolzano to the high plateau. The San Genesio Cable Car, which also ended here, will be rebuilt in the coming years. Incidentally, the place name goes back to St. Genesius of Rome, the patron saint of actors, musicians and dancers, to whom also the parish church is dedicated. Between the volunteer fire brigade and the town hall, the library, the primary and secondary school and several inns can also be found in the centre of San Genesio village (Jenesien Dorf). Farms with livestock surround it like a ring.
Plenty of hikes can be made here: The European long-distance hiking trail E5 leads directly from the village centre across the larch meadows where cows and Haflinger horses graze to the panoramic spot called Langfenn with its inn and church. The small St. James Church there dates back to the 12th century and is one of the oldest places of worship in South Tyrol. The spots along the way are simply idyllic and convey a peace and quiet that only few places still offer.
In recent years, several themed paths were created in the municipality. They tell about old times on the San Genesio Lumberjack Trail, about the special features of the area on the "Guggnweg" path and about local legends on the Legends Trail. These are family-friendly and leisurely hikes through nature on the Salto, Europe's largest larch high plateau. A little below the edge of the village, you can relax in the outdoor swimming pool on warm summer days. In the cold season, gentle tourism with winter hikes and horse-drawn sleigh rides dominate the activities on offer.
