A small village lies completely secluded between the sunny high plateau of San Genesio and the transition into the Sarentino Valley: It is Avigna, one of the districts of the extensive municipality. Far away from any through traffic, Avigna has a primary school and a kindergarten, which is idyllically located on the edge of the village near the St. Nicholas Church. The church itself with its lateral tower is listed and dates back to the late Gothic period. The church and kindergarten form a charming ensemble in the middle of the greenery with a small playground in the forest below.
Together with the farms of Avigna di Dentro (Inner Avigna) and Schwarzeck and the ruins of Avigna Castle above the Sarentino Gorge, the hamlet covers various altitudes. The new themed trail, which starts in San Genesio village and passes various interactive stations in the forest, also leads to the Sarentino Gorge. It is called Avia - The Lumberjack Trail and reminds of the Latin place name of Avigna, Avia. It means "secluded area". In German, however, Avigna is called Afing.
In former times Avigna was really remote, only one path led up here from San Genesio or Rafenstein Castle near Bolzano. Today, Avigna is easily accessible via the developed road and is connected to the San Genesio village by bus line 157. Popular hiking destinations here include the Salto plateau with all its possibilities, Mt. Hauserberg and the Giogo di San Genesio ridge. An alternative to a hike is an excursion by mountain bike or on the back of a Haflinger horse. Numerous inns and huts offer relaxation and the best South Tyrolean delicacies along the way.
