Between Earth Pyramids and mountain peaks: That’s Monte di Mezzo on the Renon plateau

High above the Köblbach stream and the Rio Fosco Gorge, Monte di Mezzo, a district of Renon, sits on a terrace. The red onion dome of St. Nicholas' Church immediately catches the eye. Inside, unique frescoes by Master Leonard of Bressanone from the 15th century, only recently rediscovered, are hidden. Another church worth seeing is Maria Saal from the 17th century.
In this pilgrimage church, alongside numerous votive offerings from grateful pilgrims, you'll find an unusual depiction of the Virgin Mary with an umbrella. A hike to Maria Saal, a popular photo spot on the Renon, can be combined with a visit to the Earth Pyramids in the Rio Fosco Gorge.
The valley between Longomoso and Monte di Mezzo (Mittelberg) offers ample space for these impressive erosion phenomena from the late ice age - clay towers with protective capstones. They are best viewed from the platform on the Pyramid Trail. Just nine kilometres separate Monte di Mezzo from the Corno del Renon, a popular hiking and skiing area. The cable car from Pemmern takes you to the summit, considered one of the most beautiful panoramic mountains in the Alps.
In summer, the theme path of Toni the eagle awaits, called "The Fabulous World of Toni". In winter, Italy's first premium winter trail at 2,000 metres altitude attracts hikers. Of course, skiers will also get their money's worth on the perfectly groomed slopes.
