Madonnina

Madonnina represents the highest, remotest, and smallest village on the Renon high plateau

Madonnina (Gissmann) is the highest located hamlet in the municipality of Renon, nestled between Campodazzo in the Valle Isarco and Bolzano. At an elevation of 1,600 metres, beneath its local peak, the Colle della Madonnina (Gissmanner Nock), this tiny village sits on the Renon plateau. A handful of farmsteads, including the Schweigkoflerhof, Mittelgrünwaldhof, and Roanerhof, along with the small Church of the Visitation of Mary, define its tranquil character.

Here, your summer retreat begins right at your doorstep. Madonnina, with its traditional "Buschenschänke" taverns, is a popular destination for hikers and mountain bikers. A lovely alpine hike follows the Heusteig - literally the Hay Trail - along Mt. Corno del Renon to Madonnina.

Even without a mountain excursion, the hamlet is easily accessible: From Pemmern, where in winter the cable car transports skiers and snowboarders up to the Corno del Renon, a narrow road leads to the Monte Cavallo. This 1,702-metre-high mountain pass is a protected area with valuable biotopes, such as the Monte Cavallo Moor and the Schussmoos. From there, you can reach Madonnina in about an hour. Hikes around the settlement are rewarding in every season.

In summer, a refreshing South Tyrolean Marende in the afternoon beckons under the Renon sun. In winter, a hot soup warms you in the cosy farm inns. Between summer and autumn, a hiking bus operates by reservation between Madonnina, the Monte Cavallo saddle, and Pemmern.
