Umes, a hamlet of Fié allo Sciliar, is a good starting point for hikes in the Sciliar area
On the banks of the Rio Sciliar lies Umes (Ums) with its farmhouses and St. Martin's Church, built in the centre of the small hamlet. The stream flows from the area of the Sesselschwaige Hut on the Sciliar down into the Valle Isarco, and forms the border between Umes and the neighbouring village of Presule, which is famous for its Presule Castle, a magnificent Renaissance-style castle.
St. Martin's Church in Umes, however, is a simple, white building with a square bell tower, which, together with the Sciliar in the background, creates a particularly rural scene in the Dolomites. From here, you can set off on numerous tours, as the Sciliar alpine pastures, for example, are located in the Umes area. This also includes the Bolzano al Monte Pez Hut, or Schlernhaus.
It has stood in the mountains for over 140 years. Today, the "Castle in the Mountains" is one of the most impressive mountain huts in South Tyrol. The pace is more leisurely on the Umes circular trail or on the path to the Fiè Pond. From this biotope and swimming lake, another path leads you to the Hofer Alpl or to the Tuff Mountain Hut, a popular family destination with many animals.
In winter, both mountain huts serve as starting points for toboggan runs, and a pick-up service is available on request. The toboggan run from the Hofer Alpl - reachable by foot in 1.5 hours - is five kilometres long, while the one from the Tuff Mountain Hut is half that length.
