San Valentino di Castelrotto

In the hamlet of San Valentino with the small St. Valentine Church, the traditional Castelrotto Country Wedding takes place

Just above Siusi allo Sciliar are the houses and farms of San Valentino (St. Valentin), a small district of Castelrotto. The centre is the little St. Valentine Church, which offers a unique view on the Sciliar Massif: In summer there are regular guided tours through the church, as the small building has its origins in the 12th century and offers some beautiful frescoes.

In Siusi allo Sciliar, a 15-minute walk away, is the valley station of the Alpe di Siusi Cable Car. In summer it takes you to the family excursion destinations and hiking paths on Europe's largest high alpine pasture, especially beautiful at the beginning of summer when the alpine roses are in bloom. One of them, the "Witches' Springs" adventure trail, tells about the witch Curandina and of the Sciliar Witches who are said to be responsible for the storms here in the mountains.

When snow falls, the Alpe di Siusi becomes a winter wonderland with 60 km of ski slopes, cross-country ski tracks and winter hiking paths, as well as five sledge runs for an adventure or two. At this time of year, in January to be precise, the traditional Country Wedding in Castelrotto also takes place every second year. This is a re-enactment of a wedding party with historical costumes and carriages, which starts in the hamlet of San Valentino and then moves through the deeply snow-covered landscape to Castelrotto, where it is time for the wedding dinner and celebration.
