The village of Castelrotto lies in a sheltered position between the Calvary and Mt. Bullaccia, right at the foot of the Siusi Alp. Originating from a castle called "Castel ruptum", Castelrotto developed over the centuries into the most important centre in the Sciliar area. The expression of this is the tower of the St. Peter and Paul Parish Church, which, with 82 metres, should tower above all other buildings in the wide area. Today it stands on the historic Krausplatz square, around which idyllic cafés, small shops and museums such as the Museum of Traditional Costumes are gathered.
Two alleys away you will find the "Kastelruther Spatzen" folk music museum, which tells the successful story of this musical band, who made the name Castelrotto known in the German-speaking world. Every autumn, the Kastelruther Spatzen Festival is held nearby against the backdrop of the Sciliar and the Alpe di Siusi. The Laranza Forest begins on the south side of Castelrotto village (Kastelruth Dorf), a mysterious forest with a royal guardhouse and a Mushroom Path. Here you can also go bowling, bouldering, play tennis and swim at the Telfen Sports Centre.
Above the meadows at the eastern end, the slope rises to the Marinzen Hut, a MTB and hiking destination with a sunbathing lawn. The mountain pasture is located in the Sciliar-Catinaccio Nature Park and can also be reached by chairlift. As soon as autumn turns into winter, the Christmas lights go on and mulled wine is served: The Castelrotto Mountain Christmas with music and handicrafts is always stylishly celebrated in a Dolomite atmosphere. The ski slopes and cross-country ski tracks on the Alpe di Siusi can be reached by bus in a few minutes.
