In the landscape between Siusi and the Alpe di Siusi lies the main village of Castelrotto, home to its Museum of Traditional Costumes
Fié allo Sciliar borders the municipality of Castelrotto, specifically its hamlet of Siusi allo Sciliar, from where the cable car to the Alpe di Siusi departs. The area of the market town extends high above the Valle Isarco up to the Alpe di Siusi, whose hotel settlement of Compaccio also belongs to Castelrotto, and down to the slopes of the Val Gardena, where the villages of Bulla, Roncadizza, and Oltretorrente are located.
These belong to the Ladin cultural area and are therefore usually associated with Ortisei in the Val Gardena. The "Kastelruther Spatzen" have, with their songs, spread the name of Castelrotto throughout the entire German-speaking world for years, making them some of the holiday village's most important ambassadors. In addition, the spectacular natural scenery of the Sciliar Massif and the Siusi Alp, with their wide range of activities, make Castelrotto a popular holiday destination.
Here you can hike to the Witches' Benches on Mt. Bullaccia, where the Sciliar Witches practised their craft, try the climbing routes on the Punta Santner and the Punta Euringer, or improve your swing at the San Vigilio Siusi Golf Club, before a warm summer's day can draw to a close at the Telfen outdoor pool. The fragrant herbs of the Pflegerhof farm and cultural destinations such as the School Museum in Tagusa or the Tschötscher Farm Life Museum provide variety.
All of this combined also prompted the association "I borghi più belli d'Italia" (The most beautiful hamlets in Italy) to include Castelrotto in its list with the note "Among the alpine pastures of paradise". In winter, the home region of Oswald von Wolkenstein and Johann Santner transforms into a ski and cross-country skiing area that extends across the vast plateaus of the Alpe di Siusi.
It is connected to the Val Gardena Skiing Area, meaning one ski pass is sufficient for both ski resorts. During the popular horse-drawn sleigh and carriage rides, you can also discover the Siusi Alp in a particularly special way: wrapped up warm in a blanket with a hot tea.
