Rivaira di Sotto (Unterrifair, literally: Lower Rivaira) and Rivaira di Sopra (Oberrifair, literally: Upper Rivaira) extend along the small Rio Ram stream. It rises below the Passo del Forno, flows through the Swiss Val Monastero valley, then crosses the border into Italy and flows into the Adige River at Glorenza. Afterwards, it continues towards the Mediterranean Sea. Above the small settlement, the meadows immediately merge into the wooded slopes of the mighty mountains, which are already part of the Stelvio National Park, one of the largest nature reserves in Europe.

All the names here already sound Rhaeto-Romanic, the language spoken in the Swiss Canton of the Grisons. The proximity to Switzerland also shapes the range of activities, which include beautiful cross-border hiking trails and cycling tours. The world-famous St. John Abbey Museum in Müstair, also known as Son Jon and just four kilometres away, is often the centre of attraction.

The two-hour Calvawald Trail starts in Rivaira and leads you flat through the Val Monastero, first along the cycle path towards Glorenza. This then meets the Mitterwaal, one of the most beautiful Waalwege paths in the Val Venosta which follow the course of the old irrigation channels. As soon as the irrigation channel crosses the cycle path again, the route comfortably leads back to Rivaira. Other excursions take you into the seemingly untouched alpine pasture and natural landscape in the Val d'Avigna valley near the main village of Tubre, a destination for every season. The mountains surrounding the valley are part of the majestic Sesvenna Alps with Mt. Piz Sesvenna.
