Sluderno village

The main village of Sluderno extends below Coira Castle and is a playground for knights, jesters and damsels in summer

It is August when the main village of Sluderno becomes a fairground. On the meadow next to the village centre with its venerable houses, wooden stands are set up, knights' tents are placed and tournaments are fought with lance and shield or on horseback. The Medieval Knight Games South Tyrol have become a well-known event in the entire region and attract thousands of visitors every year - a festival with a magnificent view on Coira Castle, which towers above the village.

It has been the seat of the Counts of Trapp since ancient times and can be visited today on a guided tour. It's worth it: The inner courtyard is surrounded by arcades with magnificent paintings and inside you can find the largest private armoury worldwide. At the castle also starts the hike that follows the Sluderno Waale - the historic irrigation channels - and the Edelweiss Path down to the gorge of the Rio Saldura stream. It offers beautiful panoramic views and leads past the Ganglegg archaeological site, which tells about the Bronze and Iron Ages in the Alpine region.

Back in Sluderno village, you can admire the finds in the Venosta Valley Museum - VUSEUM. Between all these sights, there is a cosy playground in the green and everything you need: Library, town hall, shop, cafés and hotels gather in the village centre around the Parish Church of St. Catherine. The second church here at the foot of the Val Venosta Monte Sole is also worth seeing: St. Michael is adorned with statues by the local sculptor Christian Greiner. In winter, Sluderno village (Schluderns Dorf) becomes the starting point for activities in the Val Venosta skiing areas.
