In the back part of the Val Martello, on the same side of the valley as Montesole further ahead, lies Waldberg: Montesole means Sun Mountain in Italian language, and Waldberg Forest Mountain in German language. It is one of the six districts of the municipality of Martello, which then merges into the enchanting valley head with Lake Gioveretto. Waldberg also has a popular hiking destination to offer: the Stallwies Mountain Inn at about 2,000 m a.s.l. in the Stelvio National Park, a well-known stop for a hearty South Tyrolean meal after a demanding hike.
A special feature of Waldberg is its own theme trail, which runs for three hours through the natural and cultural landscape on the hillside. With snowshoes, the trail is also accessible in winter. The individual stations on the Waldberg Mountain Farmer Trail (Waldbergbauernweg) tell you how life is here and how the farmers do their work. They are called, for example, Waldberg & Dangers, Waldberg & Lime Kiln - on the Waldberg there is an abandoned lime kiln that was used for the production of quicklime, a building material made of limestone - and Waldberg & Swiss Pine.
One of the stations, Waldberg & Park, is entirely dedicated to the Stelvio National Park and its inhabitants. Among them is the bearded vulture, which has been repopulated in the Sluder Valley in Martello. For decades it was thought to be extinct in the Alps, but now it makes its circles again in the sky here. The bearded vulture is a high-mountain inhabitant, just like the ibex. Chamois and marmots, on the other hand, can also be observed at lower altitudes - or heard when the marmots warn each other with their whistles. As the village is located above Santa Maria alla Fonderia with the Martello Nordic Ski and Biathlon Centre, Waldberg is a great place for cross-country skiing.
