Seen from above, the houses of Ferrara (Schmieden) seem to be the entrance to the village of Sesto, and the houses of Moso its end. In reality, however, these are three individual parts of the municipality that reach into the Sesto Valley one after the other. Ferrara consists of a few buildings and a few streets, one of which is the Via Dolomiti along the Rio Sesto, where the bus stop is located. The other is called Via Ferrara and leads further into the valley.
The village marks the entrance to everything called Sesto: the Sesto Dolomites as well as the Three Peaks Nature Park, which was called the Sesto Dolomites Nature Park until a few years ago. The walking paths around Ferrara become popular cross-country ski tracks in winter. A wonderful ski trail leads from the Alte Säge (Old Saw) across the winter wonderland to Ferrara at an altitude of almost 1,300 m, and further on to the Waldheim recreation area near the main village of San Vito.
A few kilometres after Ferrara, the side valleys of Sesto branch off, such as the Val Fiscalina and the Val Sasso Vecchio. The hikes lead to the alpine meadows of Mt. Croda Rossa, to huts such as the Malga Nemes and the Rifugio Tre Scarperi, and up to the world-famous Three Peaks of Lavaredo. Mountain bikers appreciate this area for its trails: One of them is the Demut Trail, the queen stage of the Stoneman Trail on the Carnic Ridge. A challenge, but scenically a dream!
