Together with the main village, the tiny Eschio forms the municipality of Verano on the low mountain ridge between Bolzano and Merano

Eschio with its scattered farms on the slopes above the Rio Eschio stream is one of the o districts of Verano, a sunny holiday destination on the Monzoccolo. In the 13th century, the area was known as excellent terrain for arable and cereal farming, but its history goes back even further.
In the 12th century Pope Urban III confirmed that Verano belonged to the Augustinian canons' monastery of Au-Gries. It is the present-day Muri-Gries Monastery in Bolzano, which houses a nativity scene museum. On the west side of the low mountain ridge, you can explore the area on foot: A pleasant hike leads from the centre of Verano to the scattered settlement of Eschio (Aschl). The small church there is dedicated to St. Anna. Furthermore in the municipality of Verano you can also visit several chapels at the Töt, Gassen and Ödengut Farm.
With its seasonally changing landscapes, the Monzoccolo is an attraction at any time of year. At an altitude of more than 1,200 m a.s.l. spring begins a little later than down in the Adige Valley, where the apple trees are in blossom. Summer is characterised by its pleasantly brisk air even when the temperatures in the Adige Valley are much higher. Autumn enchants with the colourful larch forests and in winter the landscape is covered in snow. Then the Merano 2000 Skiing Area in the municipality of Avelengo invites you to sunny skiing days and sledging adventures.
