Siffiano

Discover Siffiano on the Renon high plateau: from summer retreat to autumn colours

Siffian (Siffiano) lies below Collalbo, the main village of the Renon municipality. Between the houses rises the parish church dedicated to Saint Peter, whose history dates back to the 14th century. Amidst vineyards and orchards, several farms are nestled in the so-called Siffianer Leitach. Here, you can enjoy a farm stay and savour homegrown products: They produce organic wine and meat, bake bread, and cultivate fruit and vegetables.

Two special features distinguish Siffiano: the commemorative plaque on the birthplace of Peter Mayr, a hero of the 1809 Tyrolean Rebellion, and the nearby ruins of Pietra Castle (or Stein Castle), a former court. The castle owes its name to the Stein family, who inhabited it in the 12th century. Later, it passed into the possession of the influential Villanders family.

Among South Tyrolean meteorologists, Siffian is known for its weather station, which reliably records data such as air temperature, precipitation, wind direction, and solar radiation. If you want to explore the Renon plateau on foot, the easy, 2.5-hour hike from Siffiano to Longomoso is an excellent choice. The route partially follows the Chestnut Trail, a popular multi-day route through the Valle Isarco valley, the last section of which leads over the Renon plateau.

The Chestnut Trail is especially recommended in autumn when the forests turn vibrant colours and the chestnuts ripen. Siffiano is also known for the Toerggelen. During this traditional festivity, local taverns serve roasted chestnuts and new wine - the perfect way to end an autumn hike.
