Today the weather is ideal for a winter walking tour in the Val Ridanna valley. The fresh snow transforms the landscape in the high mountain valley into a fairytale wonderland and makes us forget the cold. We start our walk in Ridanna (Ridnaun, parking space near Sonklarhof).
Past the church, we follow the path no. 7, lading us to the valley basin. At the riverbank, paralleling one of the cross-country ski trails of the valley, there is the winter walking trail no. 8 towards Masseria and the head of the valley. Comfortably we walk across the beautiful valley, past the ancient farms and hamlets. Soon we reach the village of Masseria (Maiern), but we stay on the path paralleling the river until we reach the head of the valley at the Mining Museum - Location Ridanna, also known as Ridanna Mining World. The last section of the trail parallels the road.
This is where we cross the bridge, before our route turns to Masseria. Through the snow, we follow the traces to the hamlet of Gesennen, where we change to the southern riverbank of the Rio Ridanna brook, to Masseria. We traverse the little village and walk past the Schneeberg Hotel, towards the forest and on the southern side of the valley. The last section takes us across a forest on a forest road, the former Obere Erzstrasse Path (which means upper ore road). Like this we reach the starting point again, where our extended winter walk ends. Also the Ridanna cross-country skiing marathon takes place in this winter wonderland.
