Easy winter walk at the Monte Luco, with a great view on the Dolomites and the Sarentino Alps

At the Palade Pass (1,518 m a.s.l., parking space and bus stop at the top of the pass), our walk in the snow starts. It lies along the road from Lana in the Merano area to Senale in the Upper Val di Non. We follow the snowy forest trail west of the road (signpost no. 133) and stick to this trail also after the left bend, leading us through the forest towards south.
As the path is well-beaten, today we don't necessarily need to wear our snow-shoes. For about 3 km, the route leads through the light conifer forest with view on the fairytale-like scenery. We stay on the route, leading us into the valley of the Rio Luco stream and turning towards north at about 1,700 m a.s.l. From here it's not far to the Luco Mountain Hut (Laugenalm), in front of us the forest opens up towards a clearing, providing a great view on the Dolomites and the Sarentino Alps.
As the mountain hut is closed in winter, we brought our packed lunch. From here we could proceed (with snow-shoes) to Lake Monte Luco, on the 2,393 m high summit of the Monte Luco in the Nonsberg Group or to the Castrin Pass (Hofmahdjoch). But today we decide to walk back to the Palade Pass after an extended break.
