Surrounded by the peaks of the Tauern Mountains, this winter walk takes us from Casere in Predoi past the Holy Spirit Church to the Fonte della Roccia Mountain Hut
Image gallery: Winter hike at the head of the Valle Aurina valley
In this place, the northernmost valley of Italy wedges in the Tauern Mountains. The forest trail that starts at Casere (Kasern) and leads to the head of the valley, is a popular path also in winter and parallels the sun track, one of the cross-country ski tracks in the Valle di Tures - Valle Aurina.
Ideal starting point (subject to charges) is the parking space at the Casere Information Point of the Vedrette di Ries-Aurina Nature Park behind the buildings. After about one 1 km of walking, we reach the Prastmann Mountain Hut. On the other side of the river, there is the Holy Spirit Pilgrimage Church, considered the emblem of Upper Valle Aurina.
The path proceeds towards the head of the valley to the Fonte della Roccia Mountain Hut (Trinkstein Alm) and the Alder Mountain Hut (Alderalm, possibility to stop). In this place, after 2.5 km and almost one hour of walking, the winter trail ends. We dare to follow the traces of snow-shoes and some skis and proceed to the savage terrain, following the signpost no. 13. This is where we can perfectly enjoy the tranquillity of nature, before we decide to go back.
